Masterclases are conducted in area middle and high schools, grades 8 through 12. Philharmonic soloists and musicians observe student performances, focusing primarily on piano, strings and brass instruments. Guest artists and the Philharmonic’s concertmaster(s) assist student(s) with their repertoire and prepare them for a solo performance in their school. The professional musicians then critique and individually mentor each student to help improve his or her skills and repertoire. These master classes consist of approximately an hour and a half of targeted, individualized professional training. The opportunity for these students to work with a professional musician is an awe-inspiring, thrilled and beneficial experience that would not occur without the service of the Philharmonic’s outreach programming.
