2017 PICNIC IN THE PARK TO FEATURE HOLLYWOOD THEME: ‘Lights, Camera, MUSIC!’
SAVANNAH, GA – September 18, 2017 – SAVANNAH, GA – September 18, 2017 – The Savannah Philharmonic, along with the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs, will present the annual Picnic in the Park, a night of fantastic music and free family fun in historic Forsyth Park. The event, slated for 3:30-9:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, will commemorate Hollywood’s contributions to popular music with noted film scores performed by the Savannah Philharmonic. The community-wide event will also celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month by featuring spectacular pre-concert performances which will include students from Savannah Chatham Public Schools, featuring students from the Savannah Classical Academy’s Strings Conservatory, Savannah High School Band, and Garrison School of Visual and Performing Arts.
This year’s Hollywood theme, “Lights Camera MUSIC,” was chosen through a Facebook contest in which followers were encouraged to submit their ideas based on the trigger word, “Hollywood.” The competition winner, Lucinda Shultz, will be awarded premiere seating at Picnic in the Park and four tickets to the family matinee of the Philharmonic’s Holiday Pops performance in December.
In the spirit of the event, attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic, as well as participate in the Hollywood-themed picnic venue contest, which always results in many impressive and elaborate gourmet smorgasbords, accented by inspiring décor that cleverly reflects the theme. The first-, second- and third-place picnic table contest winners will win $500, $250, and $100 Parker’s cards, respectively.
Since its inception over 30 years ago, Picnic in the Park has served as one of Savannah’s most popular and well-attended community events. Over 18,000 people are expected to enjoy this year’s festivities, which are free and open to the public. This longtime autumn tradition is the perfect opportunity for Coastal Empire residents to relax with friends, family and colleagues beneath a starry southern sky, as the Philharmonic provides beautiful music for the evening. This year there will be beverage and ice cream vendors for attendees to take advantage of.
The Army’s 3rd Infantry Division Color Guard will take part in this exciting event and the 3rd ID will also provide their salute cannons as part of the program. The Savannah Philharmonic will take the stage at 7 p.m., performing beloved favorites from Hollywood classics, such as music from “James Bond” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” combined with melodic classical staples along the way for the city’s single largest outdoor musical event.
“Picnic in the Park represents a huge opportunity for everyone to come out and enjoy this fantastic orchestra with family and friends under a starry night,” said Savannah Philharmonic Artistic Director and Conductor Peter Shannon. “We are always very careful to try and have something in the program for everyone: for the students who love classical music, to the kids who love music from the movies, to the Army veteran who likes to sing along to the Star-Spangled Banner with almost 20,000 others! This isn’t lost to us on stage. The Savannah Philharmonic puts as much energy and spirit into this concert as we do in the biggest symphonies of the season. This year will be no exception. Come join us for moments of serenity, excitement and beauty; but don’t relax for too long. When the 1812 overture begins, be ready for those cannons!”
Anyone interested in entering the “best picnic contest,” made possible by Parker’s, can register at the event. Judging will take place during the first half of the concert. Greg Parker, President and CEO of Parker’s, is looking forward to seeing all of the inspired picnic venues in tribute to the evening’s theme. “Parker’s is delighted to be the partnering sponsor of Picnic in the Park for the sixth consecutive year. This partnership with the Savannah Philharmonic and the City’s Department of Culture Affairs provides our community with a thrilling evening of music and cultural arts,” Parker said.
