Savannah Philharmonic Brings Its 6th Season to a Triumphal Close Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Johnny Mercer Theater

Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah Philharmonic will conclude its 2014-2015 season with Brahms’s Piano Concerto No 1, Wagner’s Rienzi Overture and Strauss’s Rosenkavalier Suite on Saturday, May 9th, 7:30pm at the Johnny Mercer Theater. This concert features the Alon Goldstein, as guest pianist on the Brahms. The pre-concert talk with John Canarina sponsored by the Savannah Friends of Music begins at 6:30pm for all concert ticketholders. The Supporting Concert Sponsors are Audi Hilton Head and the German Heritage Society; Contributing Sponsors are Madeline Walker Coastal Ballet Theatre, Austin Hill Realty and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management- Bouchillon, Ham & Dekle Group; Soloist Sponsor is United Community Bank; Advertising Sponsor is Southbridge Life.

“There have been many highlights of the last season, but for me personally, this concert means a lot because it is full of the music that I cut my teeth on as a student in Germany,” explains Peter Shannon, Artistic Director & Conductor. “I distinctly remember studying Rienzi in Weimar and conducting Brahms concerti in Heidelberg.”

Mr. Shannon continues, “To have the pianist, Alon Goldstein to perform Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 1 allows us the opportunity to share this rich tradition with our audience in Savannah. It’s hard to think of a piece that can follow this concerto, but Richard Strauss’s Rosenkavalier Suite, based on the Viennese waltzes of an earlier era makes for an epic conclusion to this phenomenal season.

A tour-de-force in the piano concerti repertoire, the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 is pure Brahms – with the fullness and grandeur of the famous composer at his best. Pianist, Alon Goldstein, makes his Savannah debut to perform this masterpiece with the Savannah Philharmonic. The exuberant Rosenkavalier Suite is the perfect end to the evening. It both recalls the great waltzes and gives the listeners key glimpses into the famous Strauss opera, Rosenkavalier. Audience members will find themselves swaying in their seats.

Tickets for Season Finale: Brahms, Wagner & Strauss range from $16 to $70. Visit www.savannahphilharmonic.org or call the box office at 912.525.5050.
