The Savannah Philharmonic is thrilled to announce the launch of its Fifth Anniversary Season. Based on past successes with area audiences, the new 2013-2014 concert schedule will continue to balance symphonic, choral, and pops repertoire. Seven full scale concerts and five chamber performances make up the calendar, each to be performed at a proven venue that has been carefully selected to best suit the show. The Philharmonic is also proud to partner again with the Savannah Friends of Music who will continue to present their ever popular educational pre-concert talks. Designed to enhance the listener’s understanding of the music they are about to hear, the talks are free to all ticket holders.
As 2013-2014 is also the Savannah Philharmonic’s Fifth Anniversary, the new season will include several references to the number five. The opening concert on Saturday, September 21 will feature Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, along with Bernstein’s exciting Candide Overture and the American premiere of Buckley’s Violin Concerto. At October’s concert, in memoriam of Dick Platt, the first chairman of the Savannah Philharmonic, the Philharmonic Chorus will perform Fauré’s Requiem. The Philharmonic Orchestra will then join forces with the fabulous Equinox Jazz Orchestra in November to bring big band rhythm and hits to town, followed by the most beloved concerts of the season, December’s Holiday Pops, which will again showcase orchestra and chorus in the magnificent setting of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. January brings Puccini’s La Bohème, an unstaged concert version of one of the most popular operas of all time, produced in collaboration with the VOICExperience. In February, Handel’s Messiah will be performed by the Savannah Philharmonic and Chorus, together with musicians and soloists from the State Opera House of Halle, Germany, birthplace of Handel. The finale concert will occur April 26, as the season concludes with Mahler’s monumental 5th Symphony, to be presented in the Johnny Mercer Theatre.
“Judging by the rapid ticket sales in the first 24 hours of announcing our latest season, it seems Savannah audiences are excited about the repertoire we have chosen,” observes Artistic Director and Conductor, Peter Shannon. “A massive Mahler symphony, Beethoven’s 5th, a Big Band pops concert à la Sinatra, and a concert version of La Bohème, make this one of the most diverse
seasons to date. I’m delighted with it,” he continues, “and know that every concert will show the orchestra and chorus in a different light. It’s fun being versatile, and I’m looking forward to the challenges that the season will bring. I just hope I don’t break into a verse of “My Way” when I’m supposed to be conducting opera!”
