SAVANNAH, GA – November 7, 2017 – This year, Coastal Empire music lovers will have an extra chance to enjoy the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus’s beloved annual Holiday Pops concert. In response to popular demand and considering sold out shows last year, a full show, slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday Dec. 8, has been added to the regularly scheduled concert lineup, consisting of performances at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9. These high-energy, fun-filled performances – which will be at the Savannah Civic Center, 301 W. Oglethorpe Ave. – provide Savannah residents and visitors alike with the perfect opportunity to enjoy the sounds of the season.
The concerts will feature musical favorites, both old and new, for everyone, including traditional tunes, sing-along melodies and holiday classics. American Traditions Vocal Competition’s 2017 Gold Medalist, Julie Benko, will perform as a guest soloist with the chorus during the 7:30 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday. At the 3 p.m. Family Matinee on Saturday, the Savannah Children’s Choir will make a guest appearance. This one-hour show is perfect for families with young children and other patrons who appreciate the convenience of an abbreviated performance.
Savannah Philharmonic Conductor and Artistic Director, Peter Shannon is looking forward to this annual event,
“We all love the Holiday Pops concerts! Whether its hosting little children to “guest conduct” Sleigh Ride with the orchestra in the Family Matinee or listening to the final notes of the rousing Savannah Philharmonic Chorus, these concerts are the ones where we all tank energy and excitement for the Christmas season! As usual we are offering everything from Singalong Carols, Classical Christmas melodies right through to Christmas Movie tunes. Only here can you hear “Hallelujah Chorus” followed by with “Frosty the Snowman”! And we love it all!”
Savannah Philharmonic Chorus Master, Monica Dekle, has also seen firsthand how the iconic Holiday Pops has become a treasured local tradition,
“Of all the concerts the Chorus sings throughout the year, they sing most joyfully at the annual Holiday Pops concert. We all need a little music—a little singing and ringing through the rafters—during the Holidays, and the Chorus’s happy melodies and bright faces will certainly lift your spirits this Holiday season”.
The evening concerts are the perfect way to cap off a day of holiday merriment in beautiful downtown Savannah. Patrons can spend an afternoon browsing in quaint shops on festively decorated Broughton Street, enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the historic district’s many local restaurants, and head to the Savannah Civic Center for a joyous evening of classic Christmas tunes, courtesy of the Philharmonic.
