SAVANNAH, GA – The Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra will perform “A Classical Symphony” on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30pm in the elegant and historic surroundings of The
Lucas Theatre for the Arts. The ebullient evening will begin with Haydn’s final work, the dazzling and sonorous Symphony No. 104, followed by Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony. A loose interpretation of the style of Haydn, the Prokofiev piece was considered to be one of the first
neoclassical compositions and became one of the composer’s most popular and beloved works. Rounding out the evening will be Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4, commonly known as the Italian Symphony and described by him as “the jolliest piece I have ever done”. For a deeper understanding of the music they are about to hear, ticket holders may also choose attend the educational pre-concert talk facilitated by the Savannah Friends of Music at 6:30 pm.
“This is the first time the Philharmonic has played a Haydn symphony in Savannah. His last symphonies are full of humor, and a lot of it is tongue-in-cheek,” muses Conductor and Artistic Director Peter Shannon. “I’m looking forward to bringing that out in the music…it’s so often missed.” He continues: “I’ve juxtaposed Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 with Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, a work inspired by Haydn in which Prokofiev also tries to capture that sense of fun. It’s difficult to bring off well, so I’m also looking forward to hearing what the Phil musicians bring to the table. The second half of the concert features the ebullient Mendelssohn Italian symphony. Its beginning is a burst of joy, but it too requires a lot from the players. On reflection, it seems as if “fun” requires a lot of hard work; but we’re definitely up to the challenge!”
