Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah Philharmonic will perform Handel’s choral masterpiece Messiah on Friday, February 21st at 7:30pm in the exquisite, soaring setting of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. This concert includes four special guest artists from the Halle State Opera House in Halle, Germany. The Presenting Concert Sponsors are Inge Brasseler and the German Heritage Society with additional sponsorship by the Autobahn Service Center.

“It is rare to hear this epic choral masterwork performed in its entirety,” explains Peter Shannon, Artistic Director & Conductor. “Most people will have heard bits and pieces of the larger work at Christmas or Easter. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with the soloists from the State Opera House in Halle, Germany – Handel’s birthplace and also Savannah’s sister city.  The concert performance takes place on the weekend of Handel’s 328th birthday. The Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus will bring this thrilling, majestic oratorio to life.”

The Philharmonic welcomes, for the first time to Savannah, soprano, Romelia Lichtenstein; countertenor (alto) Hagen Matzeit; tenor, Robert Sellier; and bass, Ki-Hyun Park. These exceptional guest artists from the Halle Opera House will perform the dazzling fiery solos alongside the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra.

“We were surprised by the early sell-out,” states David Pratt, executive director of the Savannah Philharmonic. “We somewhat anticipate Holiday Pops, but to have Messiah sell-out nearly 5 weeks before a concert is definitely a first for the Philharmonic.”

A waiting list has been established for those seeking tickets. Please contact the Savannah Philharmonic office at 912.232.6002 with your name, number of tickets requested, seating level and a return phone number.
